Define Abscess. Write down the Managementof Breast Abscess

Abscess: An Abscess  is a localized collection of purulent inflammatory tissue caused by suppuration buried in a tissue ,an organ ,or a confined space

Management of Breast Abscess:::

C/F :

A. Acute Breast Abscess :

 1.common during child bearing age

2.continous throbbing pain ,lump ,fever ,malaise ,anorexia

3.Pus point may be seen

4.Overling Skin – Red

5.Fluctuation may be positive if superficial

7.May be fixed to skin & underlying structure

8.Transillumination test is negative 

9.Axillary lymph nodes are enlarged firm & tender

B. Chronic Breast Abscess

1.Past history of acute breast abscess

2.Ahard painless or non tender lump

3.May be fixed

Investigation :

1.Blood for TC,DC & ESR

2.Careful aspiration – if pus come out it is confirmatory

Treatment :

1.Immediate surgical drainage of the abscess under G/A

2.Pus is sent for culture & sensitivity

3.Appropriate antibiotic

3.Analgesic

5.Bed rest & support to the breast

6.Lactation should be withheld ,but the healthy breast may be used

7.Emptying of breast manually or by breast pump

8.Regular dressing of wound
